In November of 1999, Morten Creek suffered a significant landslide. Although landslides are not uncommon, this one was particularly bad.

As you can see, this pool was pretty well filled in, not much fish habitat here.

Thanks the the District of North Vancouver, a crew was dispatched to "vacuum" out some of the mud.

It's hard, dirty work, but well worth it. Trying to get a backhoe in here would have done a lot of damage to the riparian plants.

Finally, once the digging is done, planting native plants along the bank helps to restore the riparian zone.
